Welcome to Volktober!

In our house, we do not refer to this month as October. No. To us, this month will always be known as Volktober. This is one of my favorite months of the year because it happens to be my birthday month. And yes, I celebrate the entire month.

I don’t know why I get so excited for my birthday. Most of the time I don’t even do anything all that exciting to celebrate. But, that doesn’t matter. I still love it.

As a kid, my parents, particularly my mom, would throw really fun birthday parties for me. All of my friends would come over, we’d do gifts, we’d play, my Mom would buy a bunch of prizes and she’d run super fun relay competitions for us - often times Halloween themed, because of the month! And every year I would get a cookie cake - you know, those large chocolate chip cookies with frosting on them the say happy birthday. I will never forget coming in from our games outside to find all of the frosting licked off the cookie. Yes, my dog beat me to the dessert.

This was actually from G's birthday, but it's similar to mine as a kid.

More recently my favorite birthday celebration was the spur of the moment trip to watch the Seattle Mariners play in the Wild Card series  in Toronto. We stayed at the Toronto Marriott City Centre Hotel and it is an experience I will not soon forget. As we were walking to the elevator the front desk called us back to have us sign waivers. We were so confused, but did what we were asked. Turns out they had upgraded us to a room that had a view of the field. When I say a view, what I really mean is you’re IN the stadium. And the windows open so you can hear everything going on. It was incredible. It didn’t hurt that the Mariners won that series in two games! That was truly a birthday trip dream come true.

Another fun way to spend my birthday has been to travel to Disneyland. We’ve done this twice and attended the Halloween party both times. It was so much fun! I wore a “Celebrating my Birthday” button and everyone wished me a happy birthday. It easy to feel special at Disneyland.

Now, if you’re wondering where “Volktober” came from, it was given that name by friends and it just stuck. And I’m never changing it. It’s my favorite.

How do you like to celebrate your birthday? Let me know in the comments.
